Meet Kwame Alexander, poet, children’s book author, playwright, producer, public speaker, performer, and winner of the Newbery Medal for his novel-in-verse, The Crossover.
How did you get into poetry and spoken word?
I met a way-out-of-my-league, beautiful girl after university and since I didn’t have a car, or the courage to actually ask her out, I wrote her a poem. She loved it. I ended up writing her a poem every day for a year. And she married me. From that moment on, I knew the power of poetry. Been writing ever since.
Paper or screen?
Screen when I’m working on a book. Paper when I wake up at five am after dreaming a new ending for my story.
One to look out for…….?
Two of the most stylish novelists I call friends: Martha Brockenbrough (the snazziest eyewear) and Isabelle Dupuy (she walks like she’s on a runway)
